What type of table lamp is right for my space?

Whether layering lighting in a living room or refining your bedside setup, the right lamp can create ambience and elevate your interior.

Bedside table lamps

Soft, diffused light is essential for creating a calm and restful atmosphere in the bedroom. Choose a lamp with a warm colour temperature and a shade that evenly disperses light, making it ideal for reading or winding down before sleep.

To get the height and positioning right, a good rule of thumb is to ensure that the base of the shade aligns with your eye level when seated or reclining, helping to avoid glare.

Living room table lamps

Layering lighting is key in living spaces. Use table lamps to highlight textures, add depth, and soften corners. Place them on side tables, console tables, or open shelving to bring light where it’s needed most.

For a cohesive look, match your lamp to the materials in your room:

  • Ceramic or Stone lamps enhance pared-back or neutral schemes.
  • Brass, pewter, or black finishes work beautifully in more industrial or modern settings.

We recommend using a dimmable bulb for living room table lamps. This allows you to effortlessly switch between ambient glow and task-ready brightness.

Home office and desk lamps

We recommend choosing a lamp with a directional shade for focused task lighting. A matte or frosted bulb helps reduce harsh shadows and screen glare, keeping your workspace stylish and practical.

What size should a table lamp be?

When it comes to proportion, a good rule of thumb is for the lamp height to be about 1.5 times the height of your table. So if your table is 60cm tall, aim for a lamp around 90cm high.

What size should a lampshade be for a table lamp?

The lampshade should be narrower than the table top to prevent it from looking out of place

Ornate table lamps

Ornate table lamps bring elegance and visual interest to any setting. With intricate details, sculpted bases, or vintage-inspired finishes, these lamps are made to be noticed. They're perfect for traditional bedrooms, grand hallways, or any space that benefits from a touch of decorative flair. Pair with a soft fabric shade to balance their bold character with warm, diffused light.

Stone table lamps

Natural and grounded, stone table lamps offer a sense of permanence and calm. The organic textures and neutral tones of stone or stone-effect bases make them ideal for minimalist, Scandinavian, or rustic interiors. These lamps bring an understated sophistication to bedside tables, living room consoles, or reading corners.

Pillar table lamps

Pillar table lamps feature clean lines and architectural silhouettes that work beautifully in modern and heritage-inspired homes. Often crafted from ceramic, metal or stone, their column-like forms add height and structure to your lighting scheme. Style one on a sideboard or console to draw the eye and create symmetry within your space.

What is the best light colour for a table lamp?

Warm white light (around 2,700K to 3,500K) is ideal for most table lamps. It creates a cosy, calming glow perfect for winding down in the evening, particularly in bedrooms and living spaces.

Cooler tones (above 4,000K) are better for task lighting, such as reading or desk work.

What materials and finishes are available?

Our table lamps are made with carefully chosen materials to suit a variety of interior styles:

  • Metal – Brushed brass, matte black, chrome and pewter finishes offer a sleek, modern feel
  • Ceramic and stoneware – Hand-glazed textures for a natural, crafted look

Many designs feature coordinating flex cables, sculptural bases, or vintage-inspired switches for an added design touch. To create a more personalised look, consider our lamp bases and a separate lampshade.

What type of bulb is recommended for table lamps?

For most table lamps, we recommend using a warm white LED bulb (typically around 2700K to 3000K) to create a soft, inviting glow, ideal for bedrooms, living rooms, and reading nooks. LEDs are energy-efficient, long-lasting, and stay cool to the touch, making them a safe and sustainable choice.

For adjustable brightness, opt for a dimmable LED bulb paired with a lamp that has dimmer compatibility. Most of our designs use a standard E27 screw fitting, offering broad compatibility with a range of bulbs, including vintage-style filament options that add extra character.
