How to Design the Perfect Listening Room for Relaxation
How to Design a Listening Room: A Guide

As our homes become more focused on wellbeing, the listening room is emerging as a space designed purely for slowing down and switching off. A thoughtful listening room design brings together sound, comfort, texture and lighting to create an environment that feels removed from the distractions of everyday life.

In this guide, our founder, Mara, shares her advice on listening room interior design and explains how the right listening room lighting can help create a calm, comfortable space for music, reading, meditation and relaxation.

What is a Listening Room?

Mara shares: “A listening room is a space dedicated solely to relaxation and leisure. Originally, these spaces were designed to enhance the experience of listening to music or watching movies, but they have since evolved to also be places where you can enjoy some peace and quiet, meditate or read – offering a respite from the stresses of daily life.

When considering your listening room design, every touchpoint should be as inviting and calming as possible. This includes paying careful consideration to lighting levels and furniture placement, as well as strategically using soft materials to minimise sound reflection.

Design plays a crucial role in the way spaces make us feel, not only through the wider listening room interior design but through each component that constitutes the greater whole. Good design has a capacity and a responsibility to create spaces that fundamentally enrich our everyday lives – and what’s better than creating a space dedicated to relaxation and meditation?”

What is the Role of Lighting in a Listening Room?

“Listening room lighting is key when curating a feeling of tranquillity in the space. Choose fittings with organic textures and shapes rather than hard lines; these are easy on the eye and will support your ability to unwind in the space.

From a technical perspective, it’s essential to balance ambient light and task lighting to establish a relaxing mood. Use fitted wall or ceiling lights with built-in dimmers as the main source of light. This will allow you to adjust the room’s illumination throughout the day and night and carefully control the mood.

To ensure the space is functional too, complement the main listening room light with table or floor lamps in areas that require additional task lighting for visibility, such as reading nooks. Finally, don’t forget to select the right bulbs. Warmer tones (around 2700–3000K) are ideal for listening rooms to create a sense of comfort and cosiness.”
