GAIL’s Stoke Newington | A Collaborative Vision by 93FT x Industville

When boutique design studio 93FT began work on the new GAIL’s in Stoke Newington, they weren’t interested in replicating a formula. Instead, they embarked on an extensive process of local research and material exploration, crafting a space that feels innately connected to its neighbourhood, anchored by bespoke lighting developed in close collaboration with Industville.

This is the third GAIL’s site designed by 93FT, and part of an ongoing partnership where each location is shaped by the character of its setting. For Stoke Newington, that meant referencing everything from Victorian tiling to the green hues of nearby Clissold Park, resulting in a layered, locally informed design that invites customers to slow down, relax and return.

A Place-Inspired Approach

From the outset, 93FT took a hyperlocal approach, digging into the architecture, heritage and day-to-day rhythms of Stoke Newington to guide their design narrative. That vision was brought to life through tactile materials, custom furnishings, and a muted yet striking palette led by what the studio calls ‘Clissold Green’, a soft sage tone that runs through shelving, tiles, and the shopfront entrance light.

The result is a space that speaks softly but with real intention. Every detail is considered, and every design element contributes to the experience.

Lighting as Atmosphere

Industville joined the project to deliver bespoke lighting solutions tailored to both the environment and the design brief. Working closely with 93FT, the team developed a set of six pendants to sit above the counter—finished in a subtle oyster white and based on historical shapes drawn from the area.

A matching exterior light was produced in the same ‘Clissold Green’ tone, acting as both a visual cue and a contextual welcome. As 93FT’s Head of Interior, Amber Addison, explains, “The lighting of this space is more than just illumination—it sets the tone, enhances the mood and defines how the space is experienced.”

Functionality was a core requirement too. GAIL’s locations are high-traffic, all-day environments, where durability is just as important as design. “We chose Industville because their range is vast, and their bespoke service meant we could fine-tune every detail—colour, scale, finish—so that the lighting integrated perfectly with the rest of the space.”

Made for the Moment

Every element in the Stoke Newington store has been designed and built with care. Much of the furniture and fittings were created by 93FT’s in-house workshop, Made by HANDS, ensuring consistency across materials and craft. The lighting followed the same ethos—purposeful, robust, and reflective of the wider narrative.

Mara Rypacek Miller, Founder of Industville, says:

“Stoke Newington is a wonderful example of what happens when creative minds come together around shared principles of craft, detail and place. Our bespoke production allows us to support that vision—refining finishes, adjusting scale and collaborating closely from first conversations to final fittings.”

“It’s never just about the product. It’s about contributing quietly but meaningfully to a space’s character—and doing so through relationships built on trust, dialogue and mutual respect.”

At Industville, we believe lighting should do more than illuminate—it should enrich, support and respond to the environment it’s designed for. Our bespoke trade service is built around that principle, offering the flexibility and craftsmanship needed to bring even the most ambitious projects to life.

Whether you’re designing for a single space or multiple sites, our team is here to help realise your vision with lighting that’s tailored, durable and made to last.
